These terms cover the Splitnik app for iPhone and the Splitnik server it syncs shared trips with. Splitnik is made by Ilya Voloshin ("I" below). By using Splitnik you agree to them, and to Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which applies to every app from the App Store. Where the two differ, these terms add to Apple's; they don't take away rights your local law gives you. How Splitnik handles your data is in the privacy policy.
Your account
- Trips you keep to yourself need no account. You sign in with your Apple Account only to share a trip online or to join one.
- Keep your iPhone and Apple Account secure: anyone using them can see and change your shared trips.
- You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Delete Account.
Shared trips
- A shared trip is one book for the whole group. Every member can add, change and delete its expenses, transfers and people, and the latest change to each one wins.
- Whoever started the trip can also remove members, make a new sharing code, and stop sharing, which deletes the trip from the server (everyone keeps their own copy, which no longer syncs).
- Anyone with the sharing code can ask to join. Send it only to the people on the trip, and make a new code if it gets out.
- You can leave a shared trip at any time; you keep your own copy, which no longer syncs.
Splitnik Premium
- Splitnik Premium is a one-time in-app purchase ($3.99 in the U.S.; the App Store shows the price where you are). It isn't a subscription, and Family Sharing is on.
- While you're in a shared trip, your Premium makes that trip Premium for all its members. If you leave, the trip stays Premium only if another member has it.
- Apple handles payments and refunds; request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
The numbers
- Splitnik works out shares, balances and paybacks from what you and your group enter. It's only as right as those entries, so check them; every number in the app can be traced back to them.
- Downloaded exchange rates are daily reference rates for information. What your bank or card charges can differ.
- Receipt scanning reads receipts with on-device text recognition and AI, and can get lines or amounts wrong. Check them before you use them.
- Splitnik keeps the book; it never moves money. Paybacks happen outside the app, between you and the people you pay.
What you add
- You're responsible for what you add to Splitnik: names, contact and payback details, expenses, photos and trip covers.
- Add other people's email addresses, phone numbers and payback details only if they're happy for the trip's members to see them, and only photos you have the right to use.
Fair use of the service
Don't use Splitnik for anything illegal, to share content that isn't yours to share, or to overload, probe or break the service. I may limit, suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and I'll tell you why unless the law says I can't.
Copyright and takedowns
If you believe something stored in a shared trip on Splitnik's server infringes your copyright, send a notice to my designated agent below. Under the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. §512(c)(3)), it needs:
- your physical or electronic signature;
- what copyrighted work you believe is infringed;
- what you believe infringes it, with enough detail to find it (the trip and the photo are best);
- your address, phone number and email address;
- a statement that you believe in good faith that the use isn't authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law; and
- a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorized to act for them.
I remove what a valid notice identifies and tell the people affected where I can. If your content was removed and you believe it was a mistake or misidentification, you can send a counter-notice with your signature, what was removed, a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe it was removed by mistake, and your name, address and phone number with your consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your district. I'll pass it on to the person who sent the notice, and restore the content after 10 to 14 business days unless they tell me they've gone to court. Accounts that repeatedly infringe are closed.

The service itself
I work to keep Splitnik running and your shared trips safe (they're backed up every night), but it's provided as is, without guarantees that it will always be available or free of errors. Features can change. Trips you keep to yourself live on your iPhone and keep working without the server. If I ever stop running the server, I'll say so in the app at least 60 days before, stop selling Splitnik Premium, and every member keeps their own copy of each shared trip. To the extent the law allows, I'm not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and my total liability is limited to what you paid for Splitnik Premium.
Changes
If these terms change in a way that matters, I'll update the date above and say so in the app before the change takes effect. Continuing to use Splitnik after that means you accept the new terms.
