Questions
Does everyone in the group need the app?
No. One person can keep the book for the whole group; everyone else is just a name on the trip. With Premium, anyone with an iPhone can join the trip and add their own expenses. Splitnik is for iPhone only, so friends with other phones stay names on the trip, and someone with the app adds their expenses for them.
Do I need an account?
Not for a trip you keep to yourself. You sign in with Apple only when you share a trip online or join one, because the trip then lives on Splitnik's server. You can delete the account in the app at any time.
How does Splitnik decide who pays next?
Each person's balance is what they paid, minus their shares of the expenses, plus the paybacks they sent, minus the paybacks they received. Whoever has the lowest balance, beyond the trip's tolerance, pays next.
How are the paybacks worked out?
Anyone within the tolerance of even counts as settled. Then the people who owe pay the people who are owed, matching equal amounts first and the biggest amounts next, which settles everyone with as few paybacks as the numbers allow. Each payback is rounded to your rounding step, and the leftover is shown as ignored money.
Which currencies does it support?
All of them. Each trip has a home currency and any others you add, with one rate per currency that you can type in. With Premium, Splitnik downloads the day's reference rates for you. Changing a rate updates every expense in that currency.
Does receipt scanning need Apple Intelligence?
No. Every iPhone that runs Splitnik can scan a receipt with on-device text recognition. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Apple's on-device model reads the lines more accurately. Either way the receipt is read on your iPhone, and you check the lines before using them.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Everything is stored on the iPhone. Shared trips sync when you're back online, and changes made offline by several people are merged.
Can Splitnik send the money?
No. Splitnik keeps the book and shows each person's payback details (a bank account, a payment app handle, whatever they typed). You pay each other however you like, then mark the payback as paid.
What does Premium cost?
$3.99, once. There's no subscription. Family Sharing is on, and one purchase makes every trip you're in Premium for everyone in it, so a group only needs one.
