Weights
A weight is the size of someone's share. Each person has a default weight (Edit on their page, in steps of 0.5): 1 for an adult, 0.5 for a child, 2 for a couple who pay as one. A new expense gives everyone their default weight. To change it for one expense only, tap the ×1 next to their name in For whom and pick another weight.
Leaving someone out
In For whom, tap a person to leave them out of this expense (or put them back); everyone else's share recalculates. All puts everyone back in at their default weight; None clears the list so you can tap just the people it was for. If nobody is selected, the expense counts as the payer's own and changes nobody's balance.
Receipts
- Add Receipt Photo keeps the photo with the expense. Scan Receipt reads its lines, on your iPhone.
- Tap a person, then the lines they had; tap a line again to take it off them. Touch and hold a line for Everyone or Nobody.
- Tax, tip and service are spread in proportion to each person's lines, and lines nobody has are spread over everyone who has lines. Tap Use These Lines when it adds up.
- Edit Receipt Items in the expense brings the lines back; Split by Weight Instead goes back to weights.
- On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Apple's on-device model reads the receipt. Other iPhones use on-device text recognition, which works best on a flat, well-lit receipt photographed straight on.
Transfers
A transfer is money one person gave another, such as a payback or cash for the shared kitty. Add one with the transfer button on the trip, or tap Record as Paid on a payback in Settle Up.
Currencies and rates
- Each trip has a home currency: balances, totals and paybacks are shown in it. Open the trip's More menu → Currencies to change it or to Add Currency.
- Each other currency has one rate for the trip ("1 CHF = 1.07 EUR"). Type the rate your bank gave you, or tap Download Rates (Premium) for the day's reference rates.
- Changing a rate updates every expense in that currency. A currency used by an expense or transfer can't be removed.
Who pays next and settling up
- A balance is what someone paid, minus their shares, plus the paybacks they sent, minus the paybacks they received. Who pays next is the person with the lowest balance.
- Settle Up lists the fewest paybacks that square everyone, with each person's payback details. Tap Record as Paid when one is done.
- Tolerance and rounding: More → Payback Settings. A tolerance treats anyone within that much of even as settled, and rounding makes paybacks easy amounts. Both cut the number of paybacks; the money they leave out is shown as ignored money, and the preview updates as you change them.
- More → Share Report sends the trip as text through Messages, Mail or any app: who pays whom with payback details, every balance and every expense. A person's screen shares the same report with their part first.
Sharing a trip
- Share: open the trip, tap Share Trip and turn on Share online. It needs Splitnik Premium (yours, or another member's), and you sign in with Apple the first time. You get a 9-character code and a link: Send as Message, Send as Email, or Copy Link.
- Join: on the trips list, tap Join and type the code, or just open the link on an iPhone with Splitnik. Sign in with Apple, check the trip, and say which one you are.
- "Which one are you?" Pick your name from the trip's people, so your balance shows on the trips list and in widgets, and so you can fill in your own email, phone and payback details for everyone to see. Not on the list? Tap I'm Not on the List to add yourself. If you picked the wrong person, leave the trip and join again with the code: leaving frees the person you picked.
- Who can change what: everyone in a shared trip can add and edit expenses, transfers and people. Whoever started the trip can also make a new code (the old one stops working; people who joined stay) and stop sharing.
- Leaving and stopping: in Share Trip, Leave Trip keeps your own copy, which no longer syncs. Stop Sharing (whoever started the trip) removes the trip from the server; everyone keeps their own copy, which no longer syncs.
- Offline: changes you make offline are saved and sent when you're back online. If two people change the same expense, the later change wins.
Notifications
Splitnik asks to send notifications when you share or join a trip, never before. You hear when someone else adds or changes an expense or a transfer, or joins; your own changes don't notify you. Turn one trip's notifications off with the Notifications switch in its Share Trip screen, or all of them in your iPhone's Settings → Notifications → Splitnik.
Splitnik Premium
I bought Premium but it isn't unlocked
Open Settings → Unlock Splitnik Premium and tap Restore Purchases, signed in to the App Store with the Apple Account you bought it with. With Family Sharing, Premium unlocks for everyone in your family group; it can take a few minutes to appear on their iPhones.
Someone in the trip has Premium, but I don't
Premium covers a whole shared trip when any member has it, so you can download rates in that trip without buying it. Open the trip while you're online so it syncs. To share a trip of your own, you need Premium yourself or someone in that trip with it.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Widgets and Control Center
- Touch and hold the Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Splitnik: Who Pays Next, My Balance and Trip at a Glance.
- A widget shows the current trip (the one whose dates include today, or the latest). Touch and hold it and choose Edit Widget to pick another trip.
- My Balance needs to know which person you are: turn on This is me when editing your person.
- Add Splitnik Expense is a control for Control Center, the Lock Screen or the Action button. It opens a new expense in the current trip.
- If a widget looks out of date, open the app once to refresh it.
Deleting your account
You only have an account if you've shared or joined a trip. In the app, go to Settings → Delete Account and sign in with Apple once more to confirm. You leave every shared trip (a trip you started passes to the next member, or is deleted if nobody else is in it), and your data is removed from the server. Trips on your iPhone stay there. The privacy policy explains what's deleted and when. If you can't open the app, email splitnik@ilyav.net.
